Programme

It’s the first time in history that Szczecin has been the host to the Tall Ships’ Races. Around 100 sailing boats with 3000 sailors onboard are heading towards our city. We hope to welcome lots of tourists from all over the country and from abroad. The time from 4 to 7 August is a great holiday of sailing.
Sail Training International has been organising The Tall Ships’ Races since 2007 both on the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean. Over 100 boats from all over the world entered the competition. They represent such colours as Malaysia, Russia, Germany, England, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Belgium, Holland, etc. Among the sailing boats Sedov (Russia) is the biggest one. There is also beautiful Aleksander von Humbodt with its characteristic green sails as well as Lord Nelson, one of the two sailing ships adjusted to having the disabled onboard. Poland is represented by Dar Mlodziezy, Fryderyk Chopin and many other vessels, as in the race the participants are sailing boats and yachts, old and new, classical and modern, tall and short.
We’d like to remind that the race on the Baltic Sea started in Arhus in Denmark (5-8 July). From there, the fleet sailed to Kotka in Finland (18-21 July). Then, in the friendly stage (there was an exchange of crews among the sailing boats) Stockholm was the host (27-30 July). The last race stage is taking place on the way between Stockholm and Szczecin. In the great final (4-7 August) all the vessels will moor to the impressive wharf at the bottom of Waly Chrobrego, as well as to the quay on the other side of the river. Both banks will be connected with a pontoon bridge.
All the vessels will be open to visitors! The organisers have prepared lots of events for the participants and tourists: concerts, exhibitions, festival of maritime films, discos, EXPO-NAUTICA trade fair, breaking of Guinness record in Matelot dancing, sports competitions for crews and colourful procession of sailors along the city streets. There will be night film shows, as well as a few stages hosting shanty concerts and other.
An international conference will take place, concerning the role and meaning of Herman Melville’s works (the author of Moby Dick) and Joseph Conrad’s novels (The Nigger of the Narcissus, etc).
